A. I think the message he was trying to show is that people can joke around about killing someone but the act of actually killing someone is a very difficult process to go through. It's a very haunting process.
D. He talks a lot about the prisoner's actions and the way he looks as he is being marched to the gallows. I think Orwell used detail about this because he is trying to show that this man that is about to be killed is a living, breathing, and thinking individual and they are about to take all of those things from this man.
