A. He was referring to the Great Depression.
B. They all have something to do with keeping your guard up and not getting comfortable in any given situation. To always be ready for anything basically.
G. Well as the author told the stories of his Father, Grandfather, and Charley Best he was basically just showing that no matter how experienced a person is they still can make stupid mistakes. He wants us to learn from these stories by never getting too comfortable and being prepared for anything.
Strategy and Style
H. He talks about falling from heights because it shows that both he and his Father learned that they need to be aware of their surroundings. I think he was also comparing how stupid his fall was compared to his Father's falls which if his Father had not been aware that he was about to fall he probably would've died or been seriously hurt. These stories help us understand the story of Charley Best by showing stories that are somewhat similar to his. They develop the thesis by showing clearly that we can never get too comfortable in a potentially dangerous situation because anything can happen.
K. The author inserted these tales, I think, to keep the reader hooked. I know I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened to Charley. The other stories in the narrative really helped lead up to the story of Charley and helped move the lesson that the author is trying to get across. By telling the other tales the author gave several examples to support his thesis and then in the end he concluded with the final part of Charley's story which made his point, I think, pretty strong and powerful.

G. Well the author pretty much realizes that there is a whole world out there to explore as he is traveling from Connecticut. He is put into a new sense of reality as he sees what life is like in the South and he has to learn how to care for himself.
Strategy and Style
K. I think he did it to show how adulthood and living on your own come at different ages for everybody. He probably wrote about the porter as a way to show that some people mature at much different ages.

A. I think he just wanted to show how dishonest the children were being with the whole service and that it actually got to him and made him actually cry because he felt so bad for lying about seeing Jesus.

The experience I remember where I was pressured to do something is somewhat different. Usually people get pressured into things that are bad for them that they did not want to do but for me I was pressured into doing something good that actually had a good effect on me and I was glad I was pressured into doing the behavior. The behavior, as dumb as it sounds, was going ice skating. A group of people in my neighborhood were going and I really didn't want to go. One of my friends pressured me into coming though. He told me that if I didn't come it wouldn't be as much fun and that I would make it more fun just by being there. So I decided to go under the condition that I would just hang out but not skate. When we got to the rink my friend told me just to put on some skates just in case I later wanted to skate. It seemed like a harmless act so I did as he said. I ended up skating the entire time. I'm glad I did too! I had a really enjoyable time and without the pressuring of my friend I would've missed out on that good time. So unlike Hughes I was left feeling happy about being pressured into something that I initially did not want to do. Hughes was upset because he was pressured into lying about seeing Jesus and being saved. He sat and sat at the bench waiting for Jesus but he never saw him. So he lied and got up making everyone think that he had seen Jesus but in reality he didn't I didn't get pressured into doing something wrong like he did though. So that's probably why I came out happy was because I didn't lie or anything like that. I was simply pressured into doing something fun!

I can think of an instance where one of my close friends and I were around a bit of a socially backward kid. The socially backward kid was just hard to talk to and kind of got up in our faces a little bit and told us some strange stories. He was a little obnoxious. In the sense that he was loud and it was hard to be around this guy if you didn't have very much patience. My friend that I was with displayed his character by simply looking past the kid's awkward traits and enjoying the good traits about him. I noticed my friend would laugh along with the socially backward kid and have a really good time with him. Soon I noticed that I too was joining in on the laughing and having fun because I followed my friend's example of patience and kindness. His example of reaching out to this boy was really inspiring to me. All that kid wanted was to have a friend or two and my buddy I was with gave him that by not only reaching out to this boy but also by inviting me to come hang out with them. The example my friend showed has inspired me to reach out to others who are in need of a friend but being kind to them and also having patience with weird or awkward traits that people may have. I just hope that I can continue to be loving to those who need to be loved because everyone needs a friend and everyone deserves to be respected. Just like in the story even though Annie didn't really like the little girls and was offended by their behavior she still showed them respect and kindness in a way that I'm sure they'll never forget.
